  Collaborating For An Inclusive Community

Programs and Services

New parent education and support - This will be provided through new parent binders mainly distributed by local area hospitals and providers to families receiving a new diagnosis.  These are three ring binders that contain information about the Family Network, essays written by other families in our community sharing their experiences, phone numbers, and email addresses of community and national resources, general facts and information about disability, health care guidelines, and inspirational stories and articles about people with disabilities.

Prenatal diagnosis packets
– These are provided to doctors in our community to be given as a resource to families who receive a positive diagnosis of a chromosomal anomaly.  The packets contain general information and resources to obtain more information including; the other resources we have to offer, resources for adoption services, and one paragraph essays with photos of people living with disabilities in our community.

Website – Our website contains general information about disability, a listing of resources available free of charge in our lending library, resources and community partners with links or contact information for each, a calendar of events relating to FASN and our community partners, a photo gallery, membership information, newsletters, and other resources.

School Age Education Program – A program where we team up with community partners to provide school age children education on diverse abilities.  This is a valuable program as it is so important to begin at an early age teaching people about differences and the uniqueness of individuals.  The program involves teaching young people to recognize and value people’s abilities, rather than their disabilities.  Provided with learning opportunities and a better understanding, young people will be better equipped to accept differences, and will be more apt to embrace diversity throughout their lives.

Lending Library
– A library of specialized equipment, books and media resources available for loan.  Free of charge.

IFSP/IEP Partners and Family Advocates - We currently have peer mentors available to attend educational or medical meetings/appointments with families to assist and support in any way families feel comfortable.

Person Centered Planning – We offer free person centered planning for families in our Network.  Person Centered Planning can be used as a strength based tool to assist in determining supports, goals, and community inclusion resulting in increased independence.

Quarterly family fun days – Quarterly events geared towards anyone whose life has been touch by disability.  Events encourage people to interact and participate in activities such as; movie night, picnic in the park, sensory friendly movies and other events.  This provides important networking opportunities for families.

Monthly Support Groups –
Monthly support groups are currently in operation with more opportunities coming soon.

Community Education Program – Education to members of the medical community, community organizations, professionals, self advocates and caregivers.  This program can be tailored to the agencies or groups needs.  For example, educating medical professionals about appropriate ways to address families whose new baby was diagnosed with a disability, education on what issues families and people with disabilities face in everyday life.  These classes combine the real life expertise our families have with accurate information on disability.  We have free monthly educational opportunities as well as larger whole day trainings and more.  Topics have included disability awareness, Individual Education Plans (IEP), Fine Motor, Speech and Language, Financial planning for people with disabilities, Person Centered Planning, Healthy eating habits and special diets, and more.  All classes have free childcare provided on site for families unless otherwise noted.
